What this calculator does
This hourly rate calculator is built for the moment you need a defensible number — quoting a client, comparing options, or checking someone else's math — not a generic estimate.
The Hourly Rate Calculator converts an annual salary into hourly, daily, weekly and monthly rates — subtracting paid time off and public holidays so the number reflects hours you actually work. It also shows a post-tax rate for take-home comparisons.
How to use the Hourly Rate Calculator
- Enter your annual salary or the target income you want to earn.
- Set hours per week, weeks per year, PTO and holiday days.
- Add your effective tax rate to see the after-tax hourly figure.
The formula
hourly = salary ÷ (weeks × hours_per_week − (pto + holiday) × hours_per_day)
Worked example
$75,000 salary, 40h × 48 weeks = 1,920 h. Subtract 25 days × 8h = 200 h → 1,720 actual hours → $43.60/h gross, $34.01/h after 22% tax.
Common mistakes
- Using 2,080 hours as the divisor — that ignores PTO and holidays and understates your real rate.
- Comparing gross hourly to a contractor rate — contractors pay self-employment tax and their own benefits.
- Forgetting bonuses and equity when converting total compensation to hourly.
When to use it
Use when negotiating salary, comparing a job offer to your current freelance rate, or working out whether overtime is worth it.

Frequently asked questions
›How does this differ from the Freelance Rate Calculator?
This one converts an employee salary; the freelance version adds business expenses and profit buffer for self-employed contractors.
›Which tax rate should I use?
Your marginal or effective combined rate (federal + state/provincial + payroll). A quick estimate: (last year's total tax) ÷ (last year's gross income).
›Are benefits included?
No — health, retirement match and equity are on top of salary. Add ~20–30% to gross to compare with a contractor rate.
›Overtime rate?
Multiply the gross hourly by 1.5 for time-and-a-half or 2.0 for double time.
›Monthly rate is salary ÷ 12 — why not by hours?
Salaried monthly pay is a fixed 1/12 of annual regardless of workdays that month; that's the industry norm.
›How accurate is this hourly rate calculator?
The formulas match the standard textbook definition shown above. Rounding is applied only for display; underlying computation uses full floating-point precision. For regulated business & marketing decisions, always confirm with a qualified professional.
›Can I embed the Hourly Rate Calculator on my site?
Embedding isn't public yet, but you can link directly to this page — the URL is stable and shareable.
