What this calculator does
Whether you're new to business & marketing numbers or run them every week, the churn rate calculator gives the same clean result — with a live chart and a copyable summary you can drop into any doc.
The Churn Rate Calculator computes the four churn numbers that matter — customer churn, gross revenue churn, net revenue churn and NRR — plus the annualized rate and average customer lifetime.
How to use the Churn Rate Calculator
- Enter customer count and MRR at the start of the month.
- Add churned customers and churned MRR (from cancellations).
- Include expansion (upgrades) and contraction (downgrades).
The formula
customer_churn = churned_customers / starting_customers; NRR = 1 - (churned + contraction - expansion) / starting_mrr
Worked example
800 customers → 24 cancel = 3% monthly customer churn ≈ 30.5% annual. On $96k MRR, gross revenue churn 3%, NRR 101% if expansion beats churn.
Common mistakes
- Reporting only customer churn — a whale leaving is invisible in that number.
- Including trial-to-paid conversions as churn.
- Calculating annual churn as 12 × monthly — compound it instead.
When to use it
Use monthly in retention reviews, when investors ask for cohort curves, and before any pricing change.

Frequently asked questions
›What's a good churn rate?
SMB SaaS aims for <5% monthly. Mid-market <2%. Enterprise <1% monthly (or <10% annual).
›Is NRR >100% possible?
Yes and it's the goal — expansion revenue exceeds churn. Best-in-class SaaS hits 120–140% NRR.
›How is annualized churn calculated?
1 - (1 - monthly_churn)^12. Compounding matters — 3% monthly is 30.5% annual, not 36%.
›Does the Churn Rate Calculator store the numbers I enter?
No. All math runs locally in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the inputs unless you save them to favorites.
›Where does the formula come from?
The formula shown in the "How it works" section is the same one you'll find in standard business & marketing references — no proprietary tweaks or hidden weightings.
